The Al Adwaa Media and Journalism Services Centre (Al Adwaa) is an independent non-profit organisation based in Sudan, registered with the Sudanese National Council for Press and Publications (NCPP) since February 2016. Its mission is to foster a dynamic and informed media landscape in the country.
Founded and managed by Mohamed Hialali, Al Adwaa strives to empower Sudanese journalists and media makers through diverse projects, focusing on their growth, development, and capacity-building. Al Adwaa’s initiatives are designed to enhance journalistic proficiency, strengthen media practices, and cultivate a balanced, unbiased journalism culture in Sudan. Additionally, Al Adwaa works to protect human rights and document the human rights situation in Sudan.
Complementing its efforts, the organisation also manages Al Adwaa.online, a bi-lingual digital publication that delivers independent, balanced reporting on current Sudanese affairs and cultural narratives, relaying the stories that shape people’s lives. Furthermore, Al Adwaa has partnered in various media development projects funded by international donors.
Since 2023, Al Adwaa has been responsible for community management in Sudan for the Fellowship for Critical Voices programme, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) and implemented by Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) gGmbH, Berlin.
Al Adwaa has also served as the implementing partner for projects funded by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Wikimedia Foundation, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, UNESCO, the European Union, and the German Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IfA).
About Mohamed Hilali
Mohamed Hilali, the founder and Managing Director of Al Adwaa, is a seasoned freelance journalist and photographer from Khartoum, Sudan. With over a decade of experience in journalism, Hilali has become a respected figure in Sudanese media, known for his in-depth reporting and commitment to exploring the complex social and political landscapes of Sudan and the broader region.
Hilali held editorial roles at Al-Jareeda newspaper from 2012 to 2014 and later as a desk editor for Al Taghyeer newspaper in 2021. During his career, he also served as a correspondent for theniles.org, covering key stories across Sudan, further enhancing his reputation for nuanced and insightful journalism.
In addition to his journalistic roles, Hilali has been actively involved in media training initiatives. In 2021, he worked as a workshop coordinator and co-trainer with Deutsche Welle (DW) Akademie, helping to equip the next generation of journalists with essential skills for the digital age. His academic background in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Khartoum has provided a solid foundation for his career, which he has continuously built upon.
Fluent in Arabic and English, Mohamed Hilali remains dedicated to journalism, driven by a passion for truth and a commitment to amplifying the voices of those often unheard.
